Hi folks! It's been a while since I was able to blog, and today's is just a quick note about donations to our troops in Afghanistan. This is an email some of you may have received from our Service Unit Manager, Kathy Gendreau:

The Friends of Troops organization at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church has asked our Service Unit to help collect toiletries and other needed items to be sent in care packages to troops in Afghanistan next month.  Also included in the care packages will be Operation Cookie Drop cookies collected by our Service Unit during our most recent cookie sale. These care packages are shipped to individual soldiers who are identified by members of the church, the community, or by their command, as being in need of support. Packages are also sent to base chaplains who distribute items to soldiers as needed.

Please see the list of items below that are needed, and share it with family, friends and neighbors who may be interested in helping out.  Monetary donations are also needed to help pay for postage. Kathy will be delivering the donated items to the church on June 1st.  Please let her know if you have items to donate and she will make arrangements to get them from you. You may leave comments on this blog if you'd like to donate.

Items will be packed into boxes on June 15th, and volunteers are needed to help. Girls and their families are welcome and encouraged to help with the box packing, which will take place at Shepherd of the Valley.  More information will be posted as it become available.

Thank you!

Leader Appreciation Day

Today!

Today, Girl Scouts thanks the leaders of our daughters' Girl Scout troops for their time, dedication, and passion to this organization and more importantly, to our daughters. Becoming a leader takes time and training. There is a mountain of paperwork to keep track of. There are many different personalities of girls to manage, and there are many directions a troop may want to explore (all at the same time). It takes many hours, sometimes days, to plan one troop meeting. Did you know that there are two special trainings a leader has to attend just to go on a simple overnight camping trip?  Did you know your daughter's troop leader is a volunteer?

Please take a moment today to thank your daughter's troop leader for her time and her talents that she freely gives to our girls.

And to you troop leaders, thank you. You are shaping a generation of women, teaching them through your words and actions what it means to be a woman and a citizen. They are learning that they can do anything if they are willing to try. They are learning that they can positively affect the world around them, and they are learning to be themselves. One day, we'll watch them pass it on.

Calling All PAs.

Will you be a Cadette or higher next school year? Are you planning on being a PA or Camp Assistant at Covington Kid Ventures day camp August 12-16th? Have you registered yet?

It's time once again for the Annual Patch Design competition.  Here's the rules:

  1. The patch will either be a square or circle, so make sure your design is drawn in a square or circle.
  2. Design must be hand drawn.
  3. Design may have no more than 7 colors.
  4. Design must have: Covington KidVentures Day Camp 2013 and Under Water Adventure on it.
  5. Design must be turned in by July 1st, as we will be voting on the design at the Camp Volunteer meeting July 1st.
  6. Artist must be a registered PA or Camp Assistant (Cadette or older girl helper who hasn't completed the PA training yet.)

Tip: The patch will be 2 1/2 to 3 inches in diameter, so be careful not to add too many details. They'll get "muddied" or lost on the final patch.  Also, we can not guarantee the colors on the final patch will exactly match those you've chosen (but we'll get as close as we can!).

Covington KidVentures Day Camp

News Update

The early registration deadline is quickly creeping up on us! After May 1st the price of camp goes up to $155. If you are planning on using Cookie Dough to pay for some or all of your camp, you can still register now and pay us after that has been straightened out. Spots are filling up in some units, so it's important to sign up sooner than later. DON'T WAIT! If you don't have the registration forms, please contact Naome Fouts (info below).

The overall theme for camp this year is Underwater Adventure and we've decided to have a different watery theme each day: Mermaid Monday, Island Tuesday, Shipwreck Wednesday, Pirate Thursday, and Water Olympics Friday. Thursday night there will be an overnight for all girls grades 4 and up.

For more information, contact our Day Camp Director Leona Reinhardt at lsreinhardt@yahoo.com, or our Registrar Naome Fouts at naomef@msn.com.

One last thing- here's the recipe the Core Planning Group asked me to share:

Chewy Brown Sugar Oatmeal Bars

4 oz unsalted butter
1 cup light brown sugar, firmly packed
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinch of salt
2 cups old-fashioned oatmeal (not instant)
1 teaspoon good vanilla extract

Butter an 8-inch cake pan, and preheat your oven to 350.
Cook and stir the butter and sugar in a medium-sized saucepan over medium heat until melted.
Remove the pan from the heat. Sift the baking powder (you don't want little sour clumps in your caramel) and stir until smooth, then add the salt, oatmeal, and vanilla. This will be thick.
Pour into your prepared cake pan, smooth and press into a compact layer.
Bake for 25 minutes. It will come out soft, but will harden as it cools. Run a knife around the edges of the pan before it cools, but leave it in the pan until completely cool. Makes 24 small bars.

March  2013

I've been hearing some unfortunate tales about things going down at site sales in our area, and as we head into the second weekend I thought it would be a good time to remind folks about the rules and regulations concerning the selling of Girl Scout cookies.

First, lets go over why we sell these tasty cookies:

  1. Well duh, we need to raise funds so our Scouts can do all the fun stuff they want to do.
  2. To learn about goal setting. What does a girl want to do? How much will it cost? How many boxes of cookies must she sell in order to attain that goal?
  3. To learn about money management from counting change to keeping it safe.
  4. To learn about marketing and sales. How do we present ourselves, Girl Scouts, and our product?
So what are the rules?  We follow the Safety Wise section on product sales, which says in part:

"Girls plan the activity. In order for girls to gain essential leadership skills inherent in the Girl Scout program, it is important to involve girls in the goal setting, planning, and execution of product sales. For this reason, adults may assist, but cannot sell Girl Scout products." Also, girls must wear their pin, their uniform, or Girl Scout clothing (like a GS t-shirt) to clearly identify themselves as Girl Scouts.  And, they must use the buddy system at all times and girls at the Daisy and Brownie levels must be accompanied by an adult, at ALL times; older girls can go to the bathroom etc. in pairs.

It comes down to the Promise and the Law.

The Girl Scout Law
I will do my best to behonest and fair,
friendly and helpful,
considerate and caring,
courageous and strong, and
responsible for what I say and do,
and torespect myself and others,
respect authority,
use resources wisely,
make the world a better place, and
be a sister to every Girl Scout.

As we go about doing whatever we're doing as Girl Scouts, we need to think about whether what we're doing is following that promise and that law. The words mean something, and we did say we promised.

Good luck with your sales this week!

February 2013

Happy February!

As you can see, I'm trying something new this month. Let's see if a blog format works better for our Service Unit.

It was wonderful to see those leaders who could make it to the Leader Retreat this past weekend. Troop House 5 was full of laughter, good discussions, and Mod Podge. Did you know there's a glittery Mod Podge?

Did you know?

One discussion we had this weekend concerned the badges and awards troops and girls can work on if you're looking for something a little different. In the Girl's Guide to Girl Scouting under the Handbook tab, look for the section titled "Awards that Show What You've Learned". These are the national badges and awards through GSUSA, and it takes you through the basics of the Journeys for your age group, the leadership awards, service badges, explains the different types of proficiency badges, mentoring awards, meritorious service awards, My Promise, My Faith awards, and much more.  Our council and region also has some awards and interest projects available for our girls to earn such as the All Star Girl Scout patch for troops, and several many others. You can find these at:  https://www.girlscoutsww.org/Things-To-Do/discover-more/Pages/Badges.aspx. Please note that many of the council specific badges are being phased out, so if your girls want to earn them, you'll need to order the patches right away before they run out.
Better a few badges thoroughly deserved than a sleeve full of half-earned ones. -Scouting for Girls, 1930

Upcoming Service Unit Events

Come learn how to throw your own dinner party at Troop 41746 Manners Night  Tuesday, March 19 at Jenkins Creek Elementary from 5:45 to 7:30pm. $12 per girl, adults are free. Contact Lora Reed for more information.

Covington KidVenture Day Camp Registration Event will be held February 25th  at 6:30pm  in the library at Cedar Heights Middle School.

Certified CPR/First Aid Class open to any of our service unit volunteers. Feb 25 1:00-5:30 $15 to cover the cost of materials and if you would like a copy of the CPR/First Aid book $15. Please contact naomef@msn.com if you are interested.

Cookie News

Several folks have asked why we are not selling the new Mango Creme cookies. Here's the reply Kathy Lytle posted on Facebook:
"There are 2 bakeries in the US that produce GS cookies. Our cookies come from Little Brownie Bakers located in Louisville, KY. The other is ABC Bakers, which may be out of Virginia. They are the ones doing the Mango Cremes. Some of the cookies are similar, but with different names. Our bakery only produces the 8 cookies we had last year with some councils, such as ours, choosing to sell only 6."

An Early Girl Scout Cookie® Recipe
1 cup butter
1 cup sugar plus additional amount for topping (optional)
2 eggs
2 tablespoons milk
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons baking powder
Cream butter and the cup of sugar; add well-beaten eggs, then milk, vanilla, flour, salt, and baking powder. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour. Roll dough, cut into trefoil shapes, and sprinkle sugar on top, if desired. Bake in a quick oven (375°) for approximately 8 to 10 minutes or until the edges begin to brown. Makes six- to seven-dozen cookies.

Help Wanted

Our Service Unit has lots of volunteer opportunities. Whether you've got just a little time, or are ready to tackle a whole project, we could really use your time and talents. We are a small service unit with big dreams and only a handful of people working to keep it all together.
One huge need we have is someone to help recruit adult volunteers. We do need leaders as well (especially for Daisy and Brownie troops), but having someone help identify folks who want to volunteer, and then help walk them through the process of becoming a volunteer would be invaluable. We also really need a cookie manager, and we'd love someone to set up a website for us.

Because other service units in South King County also are in desperate need of volunteers, Girl Scouts of Western Washington is looking into putting on a Volunteer Fair here in Covington! The plan is to have a day of Girl Scouting experiences for adults (s'mores anyone?), while informing prospective volunteers of all the volunteer opportunities available in our area. As of right now, we have it tentatively set for April 20th from 10am-2pm.
Please contact Amelia Higgins (fionasfolks@gmail.com) or Kathy Gendreau (kgendreau2@gmail.com) if you'd like to help out.

Summer Camp

The new camp guide for Summer 2013 has come out. Did you get it? Go here to take a look: http://camp.girlscoutsww.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/2013-Summer-Guide-Camp-Brochure.pdf  There are several changes to note, so be sure to peruse the whole thing. One important difference is that the fee structure has changed to allow families to choose how much they will pay. To help keep our camps open and running great programs, the hope is that families will choose to pay the highest amount the can afford.

Fundraising

Camp Lyle McLeod needs to refurbish their emergency access road with new culverts to allow salmon to pass through on their way out to the ocean and then back up to spawn. We need to raise $30,000 to help pay for this project. Please contact Sue Ramsey to donate, or go to www.girlscoutsww.org and click on Donate.

How can your troop help support Girl Scouts of Western Washington's H.O.R.S.E. (Helping Our Riders Succeed Everyday) Program at our camps? We need to raise $60,000 to cover the purchase of 37 horses and their tack. For a donation of $500 (which can purchase as complete set of tack for one horse at our Girl Scout camps), your troop will have a horse shoe with your troop's number noted to hang in the horse barn. The donation of $1,000 can purchase a pony for our Girl Scout Camps, and will include a picnic lunch at Camp River Ranch or Camp St. Albans (TBD) for your troop, and for $1,5000 (which will purchase a horse for one of our camps), a picnic lunch will be included as well as a horse shoe with your troop's number noted on it. Please contact Sue Ramsey for more information or to donate.
